A History of Achievement since 1924


 

 


    1920s
The A. Duie Pyle company is founded in 1924 by Mr. Alexander Duie Pyle, who begins an 88 year relationship with his first customer, Lukens Steel. Located in Coatesville, PA, the company started on its journey toward becoming a highly-reputable company in a fiercely competitive industry by offering LTL, Truckload and Warehousing throughout the region.

 


    1930s
The company weathers the Great Depression and by 1935 the company is “Grandfathered” under new Interstate Commerce Commission regulation.
 


    1940s
The company continues to grow and through tough war-times helps to move urgent war materials, including materials used in the "Manhattan Project" which produced the Atomic Bomb and ended the war. Soon after WWII, Mr. Pyle’s son-in-law, Jim Latta joins the company and later takes the helm, guiding the company through the next four decades.

 


    1950s
In 1953, A. Duie Pyle’s LTL operation is moved from Coatesville to West Chester.

In 1957, Pyle is one of the first carriers to innovate its operations through commercial two-way radio technology.
 


    1960s
After moving the company to West Chester, Jim Latta expands the business with the addition of two warehouse facilities in West Chester.
 


    1970s
Additional warehousing facilities are built in Pennsylvania, providing the warehouse operation with rail access and over a half million sq ft of space for customers. Two of Jim Latta’s sons, Jimmy and Duie, join the leadership ranks of the company.
 


    1980s
Following the 1980 de-regulation of the transportation industry, A. Duie Pyle opens a leasing operation, builds a new 100-door LTL terminal, and institutes a formalized Quality Process program. During this time, Jim Latta’s third son, Peter, enters the family business and becomes President and CEO of A. Duie Pyle.
 











    1990s
A. Duie Pyle begins 2 decades of expansion throughout the Northeast.

Over the course of seven years, the Pennsylvania-based company grows into a regional carrier providing comprehensive Northeast coverage. By 1997, the company offers full LTL coverage in 8 states including PA, NY, NJ, DE, MD, CT, MA and RI and parts of ME, NH and VT. The company adds 8 terminals during this time, including one in Edison, NJ in 1994 to cater to the specialized needs of NY City and the surrounding NY/NJ metro area. This terminal would later be moved to a 106-door facility in Carteret, NJ in 1998 to meet the company’s growing customer base. This facility would later play an integral part in the Import/Export business that develops by 2005 and the Caribbean service offering that is launched in 2009.

In the mid-90s, A. Duie Pyle opens up its TL division to encompass flatbed service to the entire state of PA, eastern Ohio and northern West Virginia, while at the same time expanding its van operation throughout the Northeast. The company adds an additional 250,000 sq. ft. of warehousing space in PA, and during that same time, launches ADP Logistics, its 3PL division, with the signing of its first logistics customer, Conrail Corporation.

A year later, Pyle becomes one of the first carriers to employ satellite communications technology throughout the entire LTL fleet. Further investments in Document Imaging technology provide customers with nearly instantaneous response to inquiries. Deployment of radio frequency (RF)/bar code scanning also takes hold within the warehousing operations of the company.

In 1998, A. Duie Pyle establishes a partnership with Southeastern Freight Lines (SEFL) and offers extended coverage beyond the Northeast to its customers. The company would later form a partnership with Dayton Freight for extended mid-west coverage. At this time, the company’s 4th warehouse facility is built, and an additional warehouse facility with 570,000 sq. ft. is purchased the following year in Parkesburg, PA.

A. Duie Pyle closes out a decade of growth by expanding its LTL coverage area into the Canadian Provinces of Ontario and Quebec, through strategic carrier partnerships, that later expand to include all of Canada. All three of the company’s business units celebrate numerous awards for consistent service performance over the 10-year span. Recognition comes from various customers throughout the Northeast, including Avery International, Ashland Chemical, The Scotts Company, PPG, E. I. DuPont, 3M, Reynolds Metals, Appleton Paper and York International.

The 1990s proved to be a decade of marketplace acceptance for A. Duie Pyle and an acute awareness of Pyle’s solid reputation for quality service in the Northeast. Throughout the decade, A. Duie Pyle also starts what quickly becomes an annual tradition. Beginning in 1989, the company receives the industry’s annual Quest for Quality Award for service excellence in Regional LTL in the Northeast, and upholds this honor until the present time.

 























    2000s
This decade marks continued growth in the Northeast for A. Duie Pyle and the industry’s recognition as the #1 Regional LTL carrier in the Northeast. The company also achieves a milestone of accomplishments in both technology and safety.

The company adds 3 more terminals to its infrastructure, including York, PA, Pittsburgh, PA and Streetsboro, OH, expanding service to NE Ohio, and completes construction on a new Albany terminal. By 2003, the company builds its 12th terminal in CT, and 2 years later opens a new Syracuse terminal as well as a new warehouse facility in Westfield, MA, adding 460,000 square feet to the operation. Pyle partners with Dayton Freight in 2003, expanding its reach into the Midwest.

Five years later, the company completes a $30 million expansion project and opens a Johnston, RI terminal as well as one in Northborough, MA – considered one of the newest and largest regional LTL terminals in New England. By 2008, Pyle reaches nearly 2 million sq. ft. of Public and Contract Warehousing space, with the opening of the Newark, DE warehouse and quickly exceeds that milestone with the 2009 ground-breaking of its newest warehouse facility in Westfield, MA. During this same year, the company’s warehousing operation receives the Warehouse of the Year Award from The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company for the third year in a row. Transport Services Group also receives the Truckload of the Year Award from The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company for the first time. The company continues to receive numerous service awards and preferred carrier status from its customers.

As A. Duie Pyle gears up to celebrate 80 years of service in 2004, it reaches new levels of advanced technology for customers. The company introduces “My Pyle,” a secure web site for customers, and launches its Dashboard to Desktop , offering customers the most advanced real-time shipment tracking technology available, including Advance Delivery Notification. A. Duie Pyle quickly becomes the only regional LTL carrier in the country to provide this level of advanced shipment visibility and reporting for its customers. Two years later, CIO Magazine presents A. Duie Pyle with The CIO 100 Award for bold initiatives in demonstrating the highest level of operation and strategic excellence in IT.

One year later, in 2005, Owner Peter Latta transitions to Chairman of the Board and 30-year industry veteran Steve O’Kane joins the team as President of A. Duie Pyle.

In 2007, A. Duie Pyle’s Director of Loss Prevention, Peter Dannecker, receives the ATA’s prestigious Safety Director of the Year Award, and the company is awarded the New York State Carrier of the Year Award for Safety. During that same time the company receives the highest safety award available to motor carriers in the United States, the American Trucking Association Presidents Trophy Award, which is an award the company will win again in 2009.

Also in 2007, A. Duie Pyle adds Independent Directors to its Board.

By 2009, 40 drivers are recognized for achieving one million miles of safe, accident-free driving. 4 of these drivers hit the two million mile mark. A. Duie Pyle’s success in raising the safety standards in the Northeast is driven by an initiative that began in 2003, with the opening of a new Truck Driving Academy at its West Chester campus. The company offers truck driving positions to all students who complete the most rigorous safety training program available in the Northeast. Through this unique 10-week, full-paid course, the program continues to train driver candidates in safety, customer service and on-the road driving skills, producing over 100 A. Duie Pyle drivers to date who are fully versed in all aspects of the business.

During this time, A. Duie Pyle is also accepted into the Responsible Care program by the American Chemistry Council (ACC). To date, A. Duie Pyle continues to be the only Regional LTL carrier in the Northeast to achieve this stature. By 2009, A. Duie Pyle is the first LTL carrier in the United States to receive the 2008 LTL Carrier of the Year award from BASF, the second largest chemical manufacturer in the world.

In early 2009, A. Duie Pyle acquires seven LTL terminals in a purchase-leaseback transaction with YRCW. After updates are complete on the building, A. Duie Pyle takes over the Altoona, PA facility.

In August 2009, A. Duie Pyle is recognized as a SmartWay Transport Partner by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for commitment to improve the environmental performance of freight operations.

In November 2009, a newly constructed, 243,000 sq ft, rail-sided warehouse opens in Westfield, Massachusetts. This is A. Duie Pyle’s seventh warehouse facility, increasing total warehousing operation in the Northeast to over 2 million square feet.

    2010s
In Fall of 2010, A. Duie Pyle begins solar installation at their Parkesburg, PA warehouse. Over 4,000 solar panels are installed, allowing the facility to run on 100% Solar Energy. The installation is one of only ten one-megawatt solar projects to be implemented in the state of Pennsylvania, and is funded with a $450,000 state grant through the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority (PEDA).

In early 2011, updates begin on the former YRCW Allentown facility. The 60-door terminal opens for business in October 2011.

Also in 2011, A. Duie Pyle attains certification under the Responsible Care program and is named Responsible Care Partner of the Year. Technology upgrades and security enhancements include the purchase of the Descartes Route Planning Optimization Software and the migration of all servers from the corporate office in West Chester to a tier 3 Data Center offsite.
